Notice that the same message, the seed of the word of God, is proclaimed to different hearers but their responses are very different depending on the situations they were in when they received the word. What comes into your mind as you seek to understand the parable? What does it mean to you personally when you come across the rebuke that some people hear but do not understand (Matthew 13:19), or have no root (Matthew 13:21), or are choked by the effects of worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth (Matthew 13:22)?

Jesus gives two specific characteristics of the good soil in Matthew 13:23. Are these characteristics of your life as a believer? The good soil is productive unlike the other three situations described in the parable.

It is only when the word of God effectively takes root in us that we will be able to face the pressures that we regularly encounter and become productive as Christians. As a steward of God’s word, have you been faithful to ensure that your heart is in the right state to receive God’s word and bear fruit for His kingdom?

What hindrances to fruitfulness do we need to avoid according to vs.18-23?

Our Daily Bread For 27th February 2025 MESSAGE

What do we do? Scott and Bree agonized over how to relate to friends and family members who’d chosen unbiblical ways of life. As they studied the Scriptures and prayed, a path forward emerged: First, they reinforced their love for their friends and loved ones; second, they expressed what was true and good about them based on God’s good design; and third, they shared how they would lovingly interact with them based on Scriptural wisdom. In time, greater relational trust was built as Scott and Bree extended Christlike love.

Hosea likely wondered how to relate to his wife—a woman whose chosen way of life didn’t honor God or him. God directed the prophet to “show your love to your wife again, though she is . . . an adulteress” (Hosea 3:1). The prophet evidently reinforced his love for her while also expressing what was right and true for them and their relationship before God (v. 3). His relationship with her symbolized God’s own challenge with rebellious ancient Israel. Though they’d chosen a wrong course, He provided a path forward, telling them His “love will know no bounds” (14:4 nlt) but to choose His ways for they “are right” (v. 9).

As God provides wisdom and discernment, let’s continue to extend His love and truth to those who’ve chosen unbiblical ways of life. His example provides the path forward.

REFLECT: How has God shown love and truth to you? How can you show God’s love and truth to those on unbiblical paths?

PRAY: Loving God, please help me to reflect Your truth and love to those far from You.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. – 1 John 4:1, NIV

TODAY’S WORD
When God has given you direction for your life, don’t let people talk you out of it. If God wants you to do something different, He’ll tell you. You don’t have to rely on someone else to hear from God for you. Here’s the key: Everyone is not who they say they are. This is where discernment comes in.

Today’s Scripture says to test the spirits. What is their track record? Do they have good fruit? Are there other people who can vouch for them? Don’t get caught up in their charisma or how articulate they are. You have to go beyond face value. Listen to what you’re feeling inside. They may look and sound the part, but if you feel an uneasiness, an unrest, something saying, “It’s not right,” that’s the Holy Spirit warning you.

Don’t ignore it. That’s the spirit of discernment helping you to know things that you can’t see. You can’t see motives. You can’t see intentions. But because of the integrity of your heart, God will keep you from making a mistake.

PRAYER OF THE DAY
“Father, thank You for giving me the Holy Spirit to be my helper, my counselor, and my guide. Thank You that You’ve promised to lead me on the right path. Help me to be discerning of any distracting voices. Help me to be sensitive to hear how You are speaking to me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

TODAY’S MESSAGE
Proud people compare themselves to others and feel superior if they are able to do something others cannot do. In 1 Corinthians 15:10, the apostle Paul wrote, But by the grace (the unmerited favor and blessing) of God I am what I am. If you do not realize you are what you are by the grace of God, you will think more highly of yourself than you should.

You should judge yourself soberly, knowing that without God you can do nothing of value. Success only comes by His grace. Your accomplishments and abilities are not yours to take credit for—they are gifts from a loving Father.

PRAYER OF THE DAY: Lord, help me remember that everything I am and have comes from You. Help me to always stay humble and grateful for Your grace in my life. You are only good, amen.

1 Samuel 25:28-31

28 “Please forgive your servant’s presumption. The Lord your God will certainly make a lastingj dynasty for my lord, because you fight the Lord’s battles, and no wrongdoing will be found in you as long as you live. 29 Even though someone is pursuing you to take your life,m the life of my lord will be bound securely in the bundle of the living by the Lord your God, but the lives of your enemies he will hurln away as from the pocket of a sling.

Our Daily Bread Devotional For Saturday 25th January 2025 MESSAGE:

David Vetter died at age twelve after spending his entire life in a bubble. Nicknamed “The Bubble Boy,” David was born with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). His parents had lost their first son to the disease and were determined to protect their second-born. To prolong his life, NASA engineers designed a plastic protection bubble as well as a spacesuit so his parents could hold David in the outside world. Oh, how we all long to protect those we love!

King David was wronged by Nabal, the foolish husband of Abigail. In a rogue moment, David sought revenge by his own hands. Abigail rushed to meet him with a wise reminder, “Even though someone is pursuing you to take your life, the life of my lord will be bound securely in the bundle of the living by the Lord your God” (1 Samuel 25:29).

The concept of “bundle” conveys the idea of gathering up valuable items so the owner can protectively carry them. Abigail reminded David that God wanted to carry him in a protective bundle. He was safest in God’s hands, rather than in his own. “My lord will not have on his conscience the staggering burden of needless bloodshed or of having avenged himself” (v. 31).

We do well to work to protect others when they need it, but it’s only in God’s perfect care that they’re truly safe.

TODAY’S INSIGHT
The account in 1 Samuel 25 shows that David could be a bit of a hothead. Denied supplies by conceited Nabal, he reacted in anger and went to slaughter Nabal’s entire household (v. 22). Nabal’s wife, Abigail, however, stopped David from bloodshed with wise words. She pointed out that he should trust God with vengeance (vv. 26, 29, 31) and not take it into his own hands.

Abigail fully expected David to take the throne from then-ruling Saul (v. 28), but begged David not to act rashly. In a way, Abigail’s challenge stopped him from treating Nabal the same way that Saul had been treating him—pursuing bloodshed out of self-centered anger (see 22:6-19).

REFLECT: When are you tempted to gather others into self-made bubbles of protection? How can you remember that God’s care is the best?

PRAY: Dear Father, please help me to trust You with my loved ones, knowing that You can carry them better than I can.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
1 Chronicles 29:10-16

TODAY’S ODB INSIGHT
David gathered “all the officials of Israel” (1 Chronicles 28:1) to address the temple project (ch. 28; 29:1-9) and to crown Solomon as king (29:21-25). David provided large amounts of the kingdom’s resources and also gave “[his] personal treasures of gold and silver . . . over and above everything [he’d] provided” (v. 3).

Following his example, the leaders also gave their resources “freely and wholeheartedly to the LORD” (v. 9). He then led the whole assembly in heartfelt worship—praising God and extolling His greatness, eternality, power, glory, and sovereignty (vv. 10-13). David humbly acknowledged that God owns everything! Whatever they gave back to Him was simply returning to Him what He’d generously given to them in the first place (vv. 14-16).

OUR DAILY BREAD – 4 JANUARY 2025 – SATURDAY ODB DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE:

One year, the leaders of our congregation invited us to give gifts, in addition to our regular weekly offerings, to build a new gymnasium—a space we could use to minister to the families in our community. After prayerfully considering the medical expenses caused by living with a disability, I asked my husband, “Are you sure we can do this?” He nodded. “We’re not giving God anything that’s not already His,” he said. “He’ll provide all we need.” And He did! Over a decade later, our church family still has the privilege of serving Jesus by serving people in that facility.

In 1 Chronicles 29, King David showed the leaders of Israel his commitment to support his son Solomon as his God-chosen successor and the builder of the temple (vv. 1-5). Everyone followed suit, “gave willingly,” and “rejoiced” (vv. 6, 9). David praised God and declared that “everything in heaven and earth” belonged to Him (v. 11). He prayed: “Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you” (v. 16).

As we consider all God has done and given to us, specifically the gift of a personal relationship with Jesus, we can express our worship and show our gratitude and love by simply giving back to God, the Giver of all good things!

REFLECT: How does acknowledging that all things belong to God change the way you view giving? How can expressing your gratitude through giving change you?

PRAY: Loving God, thank You for being a generous and faithful provider.

SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY: Psalms 103:1-22

Do you ever wonder why you exist? Day-to-day activities and worries pull us in so many directions that most of us seldom think about the goal of life. But our Creator made us with a purpose: to glorify Him (Isaiah 43:7).

In His Word, God tells us to testify to His faithfulness and His mighty works. Jesus considered this important as well—when teaching His disciples how to communicate with God, He began His prayer with adoration of His Father (Matthew 6:9).

That is why we should give as much attention to praising the Lord as we do to making petitions. It can be challenging to prioritize worship when we sit down to pray. In fact, doing so might even feel awkward now and then. Yet Psalm 103:2 tells us to remember God’s benefits so we will glorify Him. This psalm also shows us how to lift the Father up with our words—specifically, we should praise God for His character and His work (vv. 2-8, 19).

When’s the last time you simply praised the Lord? Observe how the Father is exalted in the Psalms and throughout the Scriptures. Then worship Him with praise as you spend time basking in His presence.

When I think about what stirs up our emotions, the hurtful things people do to us is at the top of the list, perhaps more frequently than anything else. Since we cannot control what others do, we need to look for ways to quiet our emotions when people upset us. The amplification of today’s scripture teaches us to look for the best in things, and I believe this applies to people as well as situations.

Our natural thoughts and emotions, without the influence of the Holy Spirit, can be negative. Romans 8:5 teaches us that we can either set our minds on what the flesh (human nature without God) desires or on what the Holy Spirit desires. If we set our minds on the flesh, we will be filled with negative feelings and attitudes. But if we set our minds on the Spirit, we will be filled with life and peace in our souls, which includes calm emotions. I encourage you to choose what creates peace, because a life of emotional turmoil makes us miserable.

I realized years ago that most of my emotional turmoil came from people problems. I knew from experience that I could not control people and what they decided to do, so I began to pray about what I could do to keep their words and actions from upsetting me. In answer to my prayers, and through studying God’s Word, I started obeying 1 Corinthians 13:7 by choosing to believe the best of everything and everyone.

PRAYER OF THE DAY: Help me, Lord, to control what I can control—my thoughts and emotions—while trusting You to handle what I can’t control.

TODAY’S WORD
You have things that you’ve been believing for, dreams you want to accomplish, problems that you’re hoping will turn around. Why not believe that you are coming into a due season year when you’re going to see God show out in your life?

In this due season year, God is going to cause promises you’ve been standing on and dreams you’ve been praying about to fall into place. In this due season, He’s going to make things happen that you could never make happen on your own. You may have been trying to break an addiction for years. The good news is, this is your due season. This is your year to be free. Maybe you’ve struggled in your finances and can’t seem to get ahead. Let this sink down into your spirit:

Due season is here. Promotion is coming, increase is coming, good breaks are coming. Lack is not your destiny. Constantly struggling, not having enough, that’s not the end of your story. Keep being faithful, keep honoring God. Abundance is on the way. In this due season, your cup is going to overflow.

PRAYER FOR TODAY
“Father, thank You for the promise that I will reap a harvest as long as I keep doing what’s right and not lose heart. Thank You that You are working behind the scenes in ways that I could never imagine. I will trust in You whether I’m seeing any signs or not, knowing that it’s my due season year. TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
1 John 4:13-21

INSIGHT FOR TODAY
The night before Jesus was betrayed, He commanded His followers to “love one another” (John 13:34) as He had loved them. Such sacrificial and unconditional love would be the irrefutable proof that they were truly His disciples (v. 35). The author of 1 John (traditionally believed to be the same John who wrote the fourth gospel), says that Christ’s disciples must “live as Jesus did” (2:6)—living a life of loving God and loving others.

John reminds us that “God is love” and we must “rely on the love God has for us” (4:16). Reminiscent of the language of John 3:16, the author reminds us that God loves us in this way: “He sent his one and only Son into the world . . . as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:9-10). “He has given us of his Spirit” to help us live and love (v. 13).

OUR DAILY BREAD 22 DECEMBER 2024 – SUNDAY ODB DEVOTIONAL MESSAGE:

As I sat next to my friend Margaret, who was lying in her hospital bed, I took in the bustle and activity of the other patients, medical staff, and visitors. A young woman sitting nearby with her ailing mother asked Margaret, “Who are all the people who keep visiting you?” She responded, “They’re members of my church family!” The young woman remarked that she’d never seen anything like it; she felt as if the many visitors were “like tangible love poured out.” Margaret replied, smiling, “It all comes down to our love of God through His Son Jesus Christ!”

In her response, Margaret echoed the disciple John, who in his final years wrote three letters brimming with love. In his first letter, he said, “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them” (1 John 4:16). That is, those who acknowledge “that Jesus is the Son of God” (v. 15) have God living in them through “his Spirit” (v. 13). How can we lovingly care for others? “We love because he first loved us” (v. 19).

Because of the gift of God’s love, visiting Margaret hadn’t felt like a hardship to me or others in our church. I received more than I gave, not only from Margaret, but through observing her gentle witness about her Savior, Jesus. How might God love others through you today?

REFLECT: When have you been surprised by someone noticing God’s love in your life? How does His love spur you on to serve others?

PRAY: Loving God, I love because You first loved me. Please keep increasing my love so Your Spirit will shine through me.
